Matt Forte holds media conference call

"The 100 Yards" Staff Report

Newly acquired New York Jets running back Matt Forte held a media conference call on Monday.

Forte said that he had interest from other teams but the Jets had the strongest interest, and that he felt that it would be a good fit.

"Me and Brandon [Marshall], we hold each other accountable. Even when we're not on the same team, because we're friends off the field," Forte said in the conference call.

Forte also said, "They see me as an every-down back, that's what we talked about. We left it at that."

Jets sign RB Matt Forte

Statement from the Jets website.

The Jets got their 2016 free agency underway with the signing of veteran RB Matt Forte. A versatile performer for eight seasons with the Bears, Forte will join former Bears teammateBrandon Marshall in New York.

The 6'2", 218-pound Forte has reached the 1,000-yard rush mark on five occasions including three of the past four seasons. A receiving threat out of the backfield, Forte established an NFL single-season record for receptions by a running back with 102 in 2014. He can be flexed around the field and Forte has proven to be durable while missing only eight games since being drafted out of Tulane in 2008. Forte earned Pro Bowl selections in 2011 and '13 and he ranks second on the Bears rushing list with 8,602 yards. His 487 receptions also rank second in team annals.

Despite missing three games last season with a knee injury, Forte still combined to amass 1,287 total yards. Forte had 45 rushing touchdowns and 19 receiving scores with the Bears, ranking third on Chicago's all-time list with 64 total touchdowns. Since entering the NFL in 2008, Forte ranks first among all NFL players in yards from scrimmage (12,718).

In Forte, the Jets have just added one of the most productive backs in football.

Jets should go after Bears RB Matt Forte, but not the Giants

"The 100 Yards" Staff Report
After eight seasons with the Chicago Bears, running back Matt Forte will become a free agent next month.

The Bears announced Friday that Forte would not resign with the team and that he will become a free agent in March

Bart Hubbuch the New York Post said that Forte may be a good fit for the New York Jets, but not so much for the Giants.

Hubbuch says that the Jets may only have $11 million to $13 million in cap space under the projected $155 million salary cap, and that may hurt them from getting Forte unless the "demand is low" for him.

Forte was a second round draft pick out of Tulane in 2008, and the Bears drafting him was truly not a mistake because he turned out to be a very versatile RB, and Hubbuch thinks that the Jets placing Forte with Bilal Powell would be the "framework of an impressive backfield by committee."

Meanwhile the Giants are expected to have approximately $60 million in cap space, but Hubbuch still feels that Forte will not end up being a New York Giant. Hubbuch says that the Giants already have 30-year-old Rashad Jennings signed up, and have two young runners in Andre Williams and Orleans Darkwa.
