Statement from the Eagles website.
On Monday afternoon, the Eagles announced that safety Jerome Couplin and wide receiver Freddie Martino were released.
Couplin, a William and Mary graduate, was originally signed by the Eagles off of the Detroit Lions' practice squad in December of 2014. He won one of the final roster spots with the Eagles after 2015 Training Camp, providing depth at the safety position as well as on special teams. He was later placed on Injured Reserve after suffering a shoulder injury in late November.
Couplin's departure opens up room in the safety group behind likely starters Malcolm Jenkins and Rodney McLeod. The Eagles also added two defensive backs in this past weekend's draft, Blake Countess and Jalen Mills, both of whom can play safety.
Martino was originally signed by Atlanta as an undrafted free agent in May 2014 and spent much of his rookie season on the Falcons’ practice squad. His ability was on full display in the Falcons’ 2014 preseason finale against Jacksonville, as he blew by the defense for a 67-yard touchdown catch. He signed with the Eagles in August of 2015.
Prior to joining the Falcons, Martino was a four-year starter at Division II North Greenville. He tallied 3,766 yards and 26 touchdowns with the Crusaders, highlighted by his 2013 season in which he caught a Division II-record 146 passes.
