After the first 0-2 start in his head coaching career Rex Ryan has made a bold move with his coaching staff. Ryan relieved Greg Roman of his duties as offensive coordinator Friday, a day after the team fell to the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football (37-31).
The Bills named Assistant head coach/running backs coach Anthony Lynn as the team’s new play caller on offense, the first time he will man the coordinator role in his coaching career.
Lynn was a head coaching candidate in the offseason interviewing with the San Francisco 49ers. In charge of Rex Ryan’s running backs for the last seven years that Ryan has been a head coach, Lynn’s backs have run for the most cumulative yards in the league.
Roman, who in his first year as coordinator of the Bills helped the offense lead the league in rushing and yards per carry average, brought an offense into 2016 that was expected to improve.
Through the first two weeks Buffalo’s offense managed less than 100 yards rushing with 83 and 86 yards on the ground against the Ravens and Jets.
They also struggled on third down with just six conversions on 23 opportunities, and reached the red zone on offense just twice in their first two games.
This isn’t the earliest the Bills have fired an offensive coordinator. Entering the 2009 season the Bills fired coordinator Turk Schonert just a week before the team’s season opener.
Lynn will be the team’s 11th offensive coordinator in the last 17 seasons.
