Rookie quarterback Carson Wentz of the Philadelphia Eagles, defensive end Everson Griffen of the Minnesota Vikings and kicker Dustin Hopkins of the Washington Redskins are the NFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played the third week of the 2016 season (September 22, 25-26).
Wentz, who took home Rookie of the Week honors in Week 1 against Cleveland (and is nominated for that award again this week), threw for 301 yards and two touchdowns this past weekend against Pittsburgh. He compiled a passer rating of 125.9 in the process, leading the Eagles to a dominating 34-3 win.
Griffen matched a 2016 NFL single-game high with three quarterback drops and now owns the league’s fourth-most sacks (26.5) since the start of the 2014 season. The seventh-year defensive end has four sacks on the season, tied for second most in the NFL. His three-sack performance at Carolina matched his career high he set previously vs. Green Bay (12/30/12) and at Buffalo (10/19/14). The Southern California product was drafted by the Vikings in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft and has produced 222 tackles (138 solo), 66.0 tackles for loss, 44.0 sacks (-232 yards), four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, one interception and 12 passes defensed in his seven-year career.
The honor is the first of Hopkins’ career and the 15th NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honor awarded to a member of the Redskins since the award’s inception in 1984. Hopkins became the first member of the Redskins to receive the honor for special teams since kicker Kai Forbath in Week 8 of the 2014 season.
